Journey into the heart of Georgia’s medieval past. This 3-day tour through South Georgia is a journey into the “Kingdom of Stone.” It covers the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, famous for its dramatic fortresses and massive cave cities carved directly into the cliffs. It takes you from the ancient Silk Road trading hubs to the majestic cave city of Vardzia, ending with the healing thermal waters of the Lesser Caucasus.

Day 1: The Road Through Time
- Gori & the Stalin Museum: We visit the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. You can explore the museum dedicated to his life, see the small wooden hut where he was born, and step inside his private, bulletproof railway carriage.
- Uplistsikhe Cave City: We travel further back in time to the Iron Age. Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn city carved into a sandstone mountain. We will walk through its ancient streets, see its pagan temples, and discover how people lived here 2,500 years ago.
- Borjomi Spa Town: We head into the lush Borjomi Gorge. Famous throughout the world for its healing mineral water, we will visit the Central Park to taste the natural, warm sparkling water directly from the source.
- Overnight: Akhaltsikhe
Day 2: Legends of the Meskheti Region
- Rabati Fortress: Explore this beautifully renovated 9th-century castle complex, featuring a mosque, a church, and a palace that reflects the diverse cultural history of the region.
- Sapara Monastery: A hidden gem tucked away in a forested canyon, this 13th-century monastery is famous for its intricate stone carvings and peaceful atmosphere.
- Vardzia: The highlight of the trip. We explore the 12th-century cave city commissioned by Queen Tamar, featuring thirteen stories of dwellings, wine cellars, and a stunning church carved into the mountain.
- Vani’s Kvabebi & Khertvisi: We visit the nearby “wilder” cave complex of Vani’s Kvabebi and stop at Khertvisi Fortress, one of the oldest and most imposing defensive structures in Georgia.
- Overnight: Akhaltsikhe
Day 3: Healing Waters & Sacred Sites
- Abastumani: Known for its crisp mountain air and therapeutic climate. Here, you have the option to visit the traditional Sulfur Water Baths, famous for their healing properties.
- Zarzma Monastery: We visit this 14th-century architectural masterpiece, known for its towering belfry and ancient frescoes.
- The Return: In the evening, we drive back to Tbilisi.
- Optional Extension: Not ready to go home? We can extend this journey for a few more days into West Georgia, heading toward the historic city of Kutaisi or the Black Sea coast of Batumi.
