Kakheti Wine Region: At a Glance

Experience the soul of Georgian winemaking in the lush Alazani Valley, a region boasting an 8,000-year-old viticulture tradition. This tour offers two distinct ways to explore the “Cradle of Wine”: choose the Romantic Route to walk the 16th-century walls of Signagi and visit the sacred Bodbe Monastery, or select the Authentic Heritage Route to explore the royal history of Telavi and enjoy a traditional cooking class with a local family. Both journeys feature guided tastings of Qvevri wines, authentic village snacks like Churchkhela and stone-baked bread, and breathtaking views of the Great Caucasus Mountains. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or a history buff, this 8-10 hour expedition provides a deep dive into the legendary hospitality of Eastern Georgia.

Bodbe Monastery

Option 1: The Romantic “City of Love” Route

This is my most popular tour, focusing on the iconic views and charming architecture of Signagi.
  • Wine Tasting at KTW: Start the day at the Kakhetian Traditional Winery to taste five different wines and local brandy.
  • Local Flavors: We stop in Manavi to try Churchkhela (Georgian “candy”) and Badiauri, where we’ll eat hot Shoti bread and fresh mountain cheese straight from the clay oven.
  • Bodbe Monastery: Visit the peaceful burial place of St. Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century.
  • Signagi (The City of Love): Explore the 16th-century fortress and walk along the walls featuring 23 towers. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Alazani Valley and the Great Caucasus Mountains.
Gombori Pass

Option 2: The Authentic “Heritage & Heart” Route

This route takes us over the mountains to the ancient capital of the region for a deeper look at local life.
  • Gombori Pass: We drive through a stunning mountain pass (1,620m) for coffee and “killer” pictures of the Caucasus range.
  • Telavi & The Giant Tree: We visit the quiet, historic capital to see the 17th-century Palace of King Erekle II and a 900-year-old giant Plane Tree.
  • Family Cooking Class: If you want an authentic experience, we can visit a local family. We will learn to make Khachapuri and Khinkali, and taste homemade wine, Chacha, and traditional pickled salads (Pkhali).
  • Nekresi & Lake Ilia: Visit the ancient Nekresi Monastery perched on a hill, followed by a relaxing stop at Ilia Lake and a final tasting at the famous Kindzmarauli Winery.
Lenin Head at Tsinandali Estate

Can’t decide? Make it a 2-Day Adventure!

Stay overnight in a local boutique hotel or a family guesthouse. We can combine both routes, giving us time to visit the Tsinandali Estate (the first European-style winery in Georgia) and enjoy a long, traditional Georgian “Supra” (feast) without having to drive back to Tbilisi the same night.
